Golf, “a beautiful sport for beautiful people”-In Depth Study (Entry #1)

FORE!!!…. you know what that means? Yes, it is time for another In-Depth Study (last year I explored “The Art of Guitar“). This year, I will be attempting to master the game of golf. During my childhood, my dad introduced me to various sports such as soccer, golf, swimming, etc. He would bring me to the driving range and give me some golf balls to hit and since then golfing has been a thing I quite enjoy doing. Later, when I was in Kindergarten, my dad even signed me up to a golf tourney held by McDonalds’ and of course he was my caddie!

Golf always seemed like the sport for people who weren’t so athletic. I still remembered my dad saying “don’t ever run on the golf course”. At that time, I didn’t even know it was an etiquette. Anyhow, golf, for one is slow paced and requires a lot of thinking and making decisions throughout the course of the game. Just because you can hit the golf ball the furthest won’t justify what your scorecard shows. So why golf?

When my dad first took me golfing, I was only 3 years old and just started learning how to swing the club. However, my dad immediately saw that I had great potential in this sport. I enjoyed and also showed keen interest in it, but I only played sparingly with my family and friends due to time constraints and my busy schedules. I haven’t been able to commit to this sport nor spend time in learning it in-depth. This project will certainly give me an opportunity to comprehend and explore this game.

My plan is that I will be learning the game of golf with the help of my mentors through practice at the driving range, instruction through video, playing a round, etc. As of now, I already have a mentor, Eddie Wong, student at UBC and I will also look into more assistance along the way from experience golfers at our school. Furthermore, I will be taking my game to the “pros” and see what I can learn from golf instructors. In turn, I will be focusing to work on improving and strengthening my skills in three main areas: long game (driving, tee-shot), short game (approach, chip-shot), and putting. Besides, I will be learning golf terminology and golf etiquette while applying it into my game when I begin to play rounds. My goal is to join the school golf team and then go from there. Of course, this is just the beginning of a 5 month journey and who knows what to expect. Yet, I already know that it will feature another exciting and extravagant learning experience. Golf “a beautiful sport for beautiful people” as one of teachers calls it… Please stay tuned for more!
